"One of the key aims of the work of The Iris Project is to demonstrate how Latin supports and enhances literacy skills for pupils. Over fifty percent of English words are derived from Classical roots, with technological, legal and scientific words having a particularly strong representation in this percentage. As well as this, Latin grammar provides a clear, systematic and comprehensible framework with which to grasp English grammar. "

We run many different Latin projects in UK state schools, focussing especially on schools in deprived urban regions, where literacy levels may be low, and the subject may be a particular challenge for pupils. Through our projects we introduce the nuts and bolts of Latin grammar, demonstrate the deep connections between Latin and English, and thus help unlock the complexity and fascination of learning about languages generally while improving literacy skills.

We believe that all children are entitled to the opportunity of learning about the languages and cultures of the ancient world, and that these subjects are wonderful tools for enhancing literacy, social awareness and analytical skills. Through a range of initiatives in UK state schools, we work to enrich the curriculum by promoting learning about the ancient world.
